It occurs to me this morning that shame is perhaps the most powerful of emotions, more so than any other.  Certainly is is the most unappreciated.  Shame goes to the core of our self image, or perhaps to the image we present to others.  It arises out of an action we take that is diametrically opposed to who we think we are, or who we want to be.  It forces us to confront our weaknesses, to submit to them.  To be ashamed is profound.

And shame is not embarrassment.  Shame is a private thing, embarrassment a public one.  Embarrassment arises out of a private thing becoming public, or out of breaking public norms in a public way.  We can be embarrassed about things of which we are not ashamed.  But shame…shame is individual.  It arises out of the very core of our self-identity, out of a sense, perhaps, of irresolvable failure.

Shame is the thing of suicides, of redemption quests, of tragedy.
